Monolith Law Office Welcomes Leiden University’s J.F.V. Grotius Delegation
Monolith Law Office recently had the distinct privilege of hosting a delegation of more than 30 distinguished law students from the J.F.V. Grotius study association of Leiden University, the Netherlands. This visit, conducted on April 7, 2026 as a central component of the association’s international study trip to Tokyo, represents a significant moment of cross-cultural and academic exchange between European international legal studies and Japanese corporate legal practice.
Leiden University is globally recognized for its profound historical legacy and its premier faculty of law. Specifically, the university’s Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies stands at the absolute forefront of international legal discourse, hosting leading scholars and facilitating critical advancements in global law. Welcoming students from such a prestigious institution provided Monolith Law Office with a unique, highly valued opportunity to engage directly with the future leaders of the international legal community.

During the comprehensive office tour and subsequent seminars, Managing Attorney Toki Kawase and the broader Monolith team engaged in a rigorous, multi-faceted dialogue with the visiting delegation. The sessions were meticulously designed to provide the students with an in-depth, transparent look into the operational principles and philosophical foundations that guide a leading Japanese law firm specializing in IT law, intellectual property, and cross-border legal matters.
Drawing upon his unique dual background as a former IT engineer and corporate manager, Managing Attorney Kawase shared pivotal insights into the systemic gap that often exists between rapid technological innovation and traditional legal frameworks. He detailed how this precise realization led to the founding of Monolith Law Office, which now operates with a robust team of approximately 30 attorneys dedicated to addressing these complex, modern legal challenges.

The academic exchange further highlighted the firm’s deep commitment to international collaboration and diversity. Registered Foreign Lawyer Te Chun Li and Foreign Associate Evgeniia Saveleva led highly engaging discussions regarding their firsthand experiences navigating complex international deals within today’s rapidly evolving digital environment. Their presentations illuminated the intricate realities of cross-border corporate governance and the intersection of domestic Japanese regulations with global digital standards.
“Engaging with the brilliant minds from Leiden University’s J.F.V. Grotius association was an exceptional experience for our entire firm,” noted Managing Attorney Kawase in a reflection shared across his professional networks following the event. “By sharing our practical experience and specialized expertise, we hope to have provided these students with meaningful insight into how law and technology intrinsically intersect in today’s society.”

At Monolith Law Office, we are continually open to supporting organizations and clients both within Japan and abroad on complex cross-border, technology, and corporate matters. More importantly, we view structured educational outreach as a fundamental pillar of our Social Impact initiatives. By opening our doors to esteemed international academic associations like J.F.V. Grotius, we aim to demystify Japanese legal practice, actively contribute to the global education of emerging legal professionals, and build enduring international networks that transcend geographical and cultural boundaries.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the students, faculty, and organizers of the J.F.V. Grotius study association for bringing their global perspectives to our firm, and we eagerly look forward to continuing our active support for international academic exchange in the years to come.

Co-hosting a Webinar with Eurojuris and Partners
As part of MONOLITH LAW OFFICE’s ongoing commitment to fostering a just, equitable, and highly progressive global business society, we proudly co-hosted the “Expanding into Japan” webinar in April 2025. This initiative was realized through a strategic partnership with EUROJURIS INTERNATIONAL—of which we are the first Japanese member firm—and Shibuya Startup Support, a public initiative led by the Shibuya City Office to nurture startup businesses in Japan. As legal professionals operating at the dynamic intersection of technological innovation and regulatory frameworks, we recognize our profound responsibility to act as a bridge between rapid technological advancement and societal well-being.
Navigating the Japanese market presents a unique set of challenges for European startups, technology firms, and legal professionals. Beyond standard legal compliance, market entry is often hindered by linguistic barriers, distinct business customs, and highly specific regulatory ecosystems. Recognizing the systemic gap between international expectations and domestic realities, we designed this educational webinar as a platform to demystify these complexities and promote cross-cultural understanding. Our goal was to provide actionable, culturally nuanced insights that eliminate informational asymmetries and empower global entrepreneurs to make informed, strategic decisions.
During the rigorous, multi-faceted session, our foreign associate—a legal professional with extensive experience in cross-border corporate law and data protection—facilitated the dialogue alongside Naomi Shimada, the Lead Coordinator at Shibuya Startup Support. The presentation deliberately moved beyond mere statutory analysis to explore the strong social norms and deeply rooted sense of formality that shape Japanese business. For example, the session provided a deep dive into how Japan’s corporate structures, such as the Kabushiki Kaisha (KK) and Godo Kaisha (GK), are heavily influenced by societal traditions emphasizing stability and trust. Furthermore, our foreign associate highlighted critical differences in data protection practices, illustrating how Japan’s reliance on paper-based communication and physical documents contrasts with the European GDPR’s focus on digital data.
By illuminating the vital intersection of human connection, cultural respect, and legal compliance, this collaborative effort exemplifies our dedication to structured educational outreach. The overwhelming engagement from European legal professionals and business leaders reinforced the necessity of our role as a strategic, educational navigator. We remain firmly committed to supporting international organizations, demystifying Japanese legal practice for global innovators, and contributing to a more transparent, integrated, and sustainable global business ecosystem.

Co-hosting a Multinational Event
On October 21, 2024, Monolith Law Office had the distinct privilege of co-hosting an international hybrid event in Tokyo, in strategic partnership with InnoHyve Japan and BizTech. Attended by approximately 50 forward-thinking tech entrepreneurs, engineers, and legal professionals, this multinational gathering was designed to foster a deep understanding of how varying international regulations impact strategic business decisions. As an outward-looking legal institution, our firm actively seeks to bridge the systemic gap between unprecedented technological innovation and traditional legal frameworks. This event served as a testament to our profound responsibility to support the ethical development of technology and contribute to a just, equitable, and highly progressive digital society.
The rigorous, multi-faceted dialogue featured guest speakers from various jurisdictions, including legal experts from Biztech Lawyers UK, who brought diverse international perspectives to the complex intersections of AI development and data privacy. Contributing significantly to this profound discussion, our firm’s Registered Foreign Lawyer presented a comprehensive and highly specialized analysis of Japan’s unique regulatory landscape. The presentation highlighted the current absence of direct, comprehensive AI regulations in Japan, pointing out the reliance on non-legally binding guidelines. Furthermore, it illuminated the exceptionally flexible legal environment surrounding generative AI machine learning under Japanese copyright law, noting that the learning of copyrighted works by AI is permitted almost unconditionally, without distinction between commercial and non-commercial use.
In addition to AI and copyright, the presentation deeply explored the practical intricacies of Japan’s Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI). Our Registered Foreign Lawyer meticulously explained the categorization of data, from standard personal information to sensitive personal information, which requires particular caution as it could lead to unjust discrimination or prejudice. The session also clarified the legal obligations and strategic uses surrounding pseudonymized and anonymized information, providing the audience with a clear roadmap for compliant data processing. By addressing real-world scenarios, such as the use of algorithms for political targeting on social media, the discussion demystified the boundaries of lawful data utilization in Japan.
By opening our doors and sharing this highly specialized knowledge with the global tech ecosystem, Monolith Law Office continues to empower international creators and businesses. We firmly believe that demystifying Japanese legal practice for the international community and building enduring global networks are fundamental pillars of our community engagement. Providing clarity on complex regulatory environments not only mitigates legal risks but fundamentally supports the strategic business decisions that drive global innovation forward.
